Handmade Isle of Lewis Chess Set (Blue & Ivory)
This is a reproduction of the Lewis chess set, which is among the earliest known chess sets and was originally found in a sandbank on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides in 1831. The pieces are said to have been in a dry underground stone-built chamber and were thus protected from the elements. They are at first ascribed to the twelfth century.
The crowned King carries a broad sword and is flanked by pieces representing medieval Knights and Bishops. The Rook is represented by a sentry, armed with a sword and carrying an engraved shield.
The set is made from reconstituted Limestone.
Dimensions: The Board is 37 cm x 37 cm , the squares are 4 cm. The Height of the king is 8 cm the height of the pawn is 4 cm
